Salary: Grade 6 (£28,900-£32,020)
About GMYF – Creating Opportunities and Supporting Aspiration
GMYF is a long-established charity, that works with young people across Greater
Manchester, to support their aspirations and create opportunities.
We are going through an exciting and transformational period. Historically we have acted
as an ‘umbrella’ organisation supporting our affiliated clubs, but we also now have our
own Youth and Community centre in Partington and have just opened another in
Charlestown, with a view of opening more in the future. Doing this is providing support for
young people with a wide range of activities and directly delivering on our charitable
objectives. We have expanded our team to include youth leaders, support staff and an
outdoor education team, who has established us as a Licensed Organisation for DofE. We
jointly own an outdoor pursuits centre in Cumbria, giving our young people incredible
experiences. Our fantastic team is already delivering great results and making a real
difference to the lives of many young people.
The aims for our outdoor education team are:
• Provide the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme at minimal cost to our youth centres
• Create more DofE centres in our growing number of youth centres
• Increase opportunities to our young people across Greater Manchester to access
outdoor education activities, including events and residentials
The Role
Reporting to the Outdoor Education Manager, this role will be responsible for the planning
and delivery of the DofE Award Scheme and outdoor education opportunities in our youth
centres across Greatre Manchester. The role specific accountabilities are listed below.
Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme
• GMYF Duke of Edinburgh Co-ordinator across multiple DofE centres
• Create and deliver a high quality DofE programme
• DofE expedition leader on all expeditions, managing a team of GMYF staff and
freelance instructors
• Adhere to all expedition operating procedures and risk assessments
• Create new DofE expedition routes where appropriate and recce all routes
• Maintain partnerships with any partners who support GMYF’s DofE Award scheme
• Represent GMYF and attend any Duke of Edinburgh Award meetings
Other responsibilities
• Support the Outdoor Education Manager in coordinating trips and residentials
• Drive the GMYF minibus where required (DofE expeditions and some outdoor
education trips and residentials)
• Manage the outdoor education storeroom and expedition kit
• Undertake any other reasonable duties as directed by the Outdoor Education
Manager
• Collect and create content for reporting, promotional material and social media
Qualifications, experiences, skills and capabilities
Essential
• Summer Mountain Leader Award minimum
• 16 hours outdoor first aid certificate
• Full driving license
• Knowledge, experience and enthusiasm for the DofE Award Scheme
• Experience planning and running expeditions and residential trips
• Safeguarding training level 2
• Ability to build and maintain relationships with internal and external partners
• Ability to undertake research, analysis and insight where required
• Excellent level of numeracy, literacy and ICT
• Good IT skills in using and managing documents and databases
• Good time management and the ability to prioritise workload
• Experience of working to set targets and timescales
Desirable
• Safeguarding training level 3
• D1 license or commitment to undertake training
• Qualification in youth work or commitment to undertake training if appropriate
• Experience in collecting and creating content for social media or marketing
purposes
Working arrangements
As the role includes working with young people, there will be an expectation of working
during evenings, some weekends and some weeks within school holidays. Days in lieu will
be given for weekend and bank holiday work and a TOIL arrangement to accommodate
exceptional working.
As part of employment with GMYF the role requires a successful enhanced DBS check.
This role requires travel across Greater Manchester; therefore, the applicant needs to have
access to a vehicle with business insurance, or another efficient mode of transport will be
required.
Holiday allowance is 20 working days (increasing 1 day per year for length of service up to
a maximum of 26 days) plus statutory bank holidays. A 35-hour working week with flexibility
to work from home as agreed with the Outdoor Education Manager.
We operate a 5% contributory pension scheme (defined contribution scheme).
